On May 2nd, Menominee will be holding a special election and on the ballot are two questions from the Menominee Area Public Schools. Superintendent Rich Sarau says, “every five years they have this tax that comes up. What it is, is the district’s operational tax that is connected to the state aid money. This does not affect homestead, only non-homestead and businesses.”
Audio PlayerSarau says, “the second part is a buffer for the district. Because of the 1978 Hedley Act. It protected property owners from increasing their taxes. So, what they do is roll back the tax rates of millages and sometimes it doesn’t keep up with the rate of inflation.”
Audio PlayerSarau notes that this is a standard renewal that takes place every five years and that the district is not asking for any new or additional monies. Also, in case the district should need that buffer due to the Hedley rollback, it has already been taken care of. The Menominee special elections will take place on May 2nd.
