The U.S. House last night passed a bipartisan bill that would suspend the nation’s debt ceiling for two years. Lawmakers voted 314-117 on the 99-page measure Wednesday as the deadline to avoid a potential default is just days away. It still needs to pass in the Democratic-controlled Senate before heading to President Biden’s desk.
Upper Peninsula Congressman Jack Bergman voted for the measure, noting
this debt ceiling deal contains more conservative wins than any debt ceiling measure presented since he came to Congress. He says I voted in favor of the bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act to avoid defaulting on our debts and begin clawing away at our out-of-control spending habits.
Northeastern Wisconsin Congressman Mike Gallagher who also voted for the bill said . The Fiscal Responsibility Act not only cuts spending and claws back unspent COVID funds – including taxpayer dollars that otherwise would have gone to China – but also includes common-sense reforms that strengthen work requirements for welfare, restart student loan payments, cut red-tape by reforming the National Environmental Policy Act process for the first time in 40 years, and force Congress to do its job and actually pass appropriations bills.
