In an exclusive interview with Menominee Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Rogg, he tells Bay Cities Radio about the plea deal that was offered to Former Deputy Sheriff, Brian Helfert. Helfert was in court last Thursday for one count of First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct. In open court, Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Rogg and defense lawyer Trenton Stupak announced that they had reached a plea deal in the attempted child sexual assault case in Menominee County. Rogg says, “this entire episode has been a sad one for our community and it has extended five years.”

Rogg says, “Mr. Helfert has agreed to waive his appellate right on the case by which the jury convicted of him in December 2023. This is a huge concession which will allow me to get finality in that case.”

In exchange for Helfert’s no contest plea, the parties agree on the defendant’s sentence and incarcerated penalty in the amended Count 1 of Attempted Criminal Sexual Conduct. Sentence for the Attempted Criminal Sexual Conduct is five years. This will run concurrent to the sentence being served by Helfert. Sentencing for Helfert will take place on October 11^th at 9:30am before the Honorable Christopher S. Ninomiya in the 41^st Circuit Judge at the Menominee Courthouse.
