The Marinette County Jail can hold up to 164 inmates. In the past, the county has, on occasion, housed some of their prisoners in other jails due to overcrowding. As of August 27th, the county had 131 inmates in its facility, and none are being housed elsewhere. Counties are recruiting Correctional Officers hard; often competing for workers. Marinette County Sheriff Randy Miller says, “right now we are eight correctional officers of which includes the educational coordinator position that was supposed to start this year, but we could not fill it.”
“We are falling behind compared to corrections in other counties and most recently we are losing potential candidates to them,” says, Sheriff Miller.
The Marinette County Board voted yesterday during their regularly scheduled meeting to raise wages to be competitive. Currently, the incoming wage for a correctional officer is $22.19. With the board approving up to an additional $6.00 per hour wage increase. The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office has increased its recruiting efforts for Correctional Officers and touts the job as honorable, important career, one that’s essential to the community.
