The Marinette Common Council approved borrowing a little over $10 million in a unanimous vote, Tuesday, for the purposes of relocating City Hall, the police department, and municipal court, among other projects. Alderpersons agreed that it would be best to keep the three services together. Although, alderpersons would like to build City Hall at the armory, soil conditions are questionable. Marinette Mayor Steve Genisot says, “at the special council meeting we did discuss where the $3.5 million came from at $350.00 per sq.ft.”
City Hall, the municipal court and police department currently share the same space on Hall Ave. in a three-story building with more than 31,000 square feet. For the 17-staffed City Hall to stay in the building indefinitely, the outdated HVAC system would need replacing and upgrades to the elevator and security system would be in order, among other things. “There’s going to be upwards of $1 million of cost to stay in the building, for a third of the space.” says Genisot.
