City of Menominee water customers will soon be receiving a letter from the city regarding monitoring requirements that were not met in January of 2024. The city’s water plant is required to collect samples every two weeks which are sent to a lab to determine if the Water Quality Parameters are within limits. Michael Borths, Lead Operator at the Water Plant says the samples were collected as usual during the period of January 7th to January 20th, 2024, however despite being shipped via next day service, the samples failed to be delivered in time at the lab in Lansing for proper testing to be done. A second set of samples were sent to Lansing, again failing to be delivered in time, despite the guaranteed next day service. The city has since switched to using a lab in the Upper Peninsula and the samples are now picked up locally by lab personnel. In the 14 months since the missed testing, all required sampling has been conducted as required, and the water quality has always met state standards. The letter is required to be sent out to users due to a change in policy by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, known as EGLE. In the past, such incidents would have been noted as part of the annual water Quality Report published by the city. Now EGLE is requiring the mailed notice. The city is required to have the letters sent out by April 9th. The Annual Water Quality report is scheduled to be published April 5th.
