The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) informs anglers that the 2025-2026 general inland fishing season will commence statewide tomorrow, Saturday, May 3rd. Wisconsin offers abundant opportunities for fishing with over 15,000 inland lakes, 42,000 miles of perennial streams and rivers, 1,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, and 260 miles along the Mississippi River. All residents and nonresidents of Wisconsin aged 16 or older are required to obtain a fishing license to fish in these waters. Annual resident licenses are available at $20 each, while a spousal license can be purchased for $31, enabling couples to fish together. Fishing licenses and stamps can be acquired online through Go Wild, at registered sales locations, or at DNR Service Centers. As anglers prepare to visit their preferred fishing spots across the state, the DNR offers the following reminders:
- Minimize the spread of aquatic invasive species by removing plants and animals from boats before and after launching, draining all water compartments, and avoiding the movement of live fish from any waterbody.
- Prevent the spread of fish diseases by ensuring all water, aquatic vegetation, and mud are removed from fishing equipment before departure from the fishing location. Thoroughly clean and dry all fishing equipment, including boats, trailers, boots, waders, nets, and float tubes, before reuse.
- Adhere to proper fish handling protocols if releasing your catch to ensure its safe return.
- Practice safe boating procedures and always wear a life jacket while on the water.
- Review all applicable rules and regulations for the waters where you intend to fish.
