22-year-old Austin Laakonen was sentenced last Monday to 20 months in prison for the traffic crash that killed his girlfriend, Aubrey Williams. Judge Michael Judge also placed Laakonen on extended supervision for three years on the conviction of homicide by negligent operation of vehicle for the June 30th, 2023 crash.
Prior to the reading of Laakonen’ s sentence was announced, Laakonen apologized. He says he sober now and working to be a better person.
The Crash happened on I-41, south of County Highway W in the Town of Little River, just after 7pm. Authorities say the motorcycle was traveling north on I-41 when the motorcycle made contact with and SUV just as the motorcycle was changing lanes. A blood test shows no alcohol in Laakonen’s system, but he tested positive for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. According to the complaint, Laakonen did not have a license to have a passenger and he received a citation.
