Menominee County Sheriff Darrin Kudwa reports that two juveniles were apprehended Saturday afternoon, (May 17th), following a pursuit of a stolen vehicle. At approximately 12:35 PM Hannahville Tribal Police Officers advised Deputies of a vehicle that fled during an attempted traffic stop, travelling at speeds in excess of 100 mph and passing other motorists recklessly. The vehicle, which was stolen from downstate Michigan, led officers on a pursuit through Harris and Spalding townships, eventually coming to a stop along a wooded area on County Road 563 at approximately 12:42 PM. The two occupants of the vehicle fled into the woods and separated. The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office K9 and Drone Teams worked in conjunction to track the suspects through the heavily-wooded swamps. During the process, a nearby property owner advised Menominee County 911 that the 16-year-old male was located on their property, attempting to gain access to a vehicle. The male was detained by law enforcement at 2:08 PM. A 14-year-old female was located via drone, hiding in the woods, and was apprehended at 2:13 PM. This incident is being investigated by the Hannahville Tribal Police Department. There is no danger to the public at this time.
The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office worked in conjunction with the Hannahville Tribal Police Department, Menominee Police Department Robotics Unit, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan DNR Conservation Officers, and Menominee County 911 on this incident. Additional support on scene was provided by Hermansville Rescue 121 and Gene’s Towing.
