UPDATE 5/30/25
The National Weather Service expects air quality will degrade from north to south today (5/30) across Wisconsin as Canadian wildfire smoke pushes in ahead of a cold front. The Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups Air Quality index (Orange category) is expected for much of the state, with the potential to reach Unhealthy Air quality index (Red category). The front will move through northeast Wisconsin this evening and begin clearing the air from northeast to southwest.
For people in sensitive groups: Make outdoor activities shorter and less intense. It is okay to be active outdoors, but take more breaks. Watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath. People with asthma should follow your asthma action plan and keep quick relief medicine handy. People with heart disease be aware symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue may indicate a serious problem.
There were 173 wildfires across Canada as of last night and 92 are labeled as “out of control” , according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. Most of the fires were in British Columbia or Alberta.
Northern Wisconsin could be impacted by smoke from Canadian Wildfires during the next couple of days.
As a low pressure system over Minnesota begins to drift to the east, winds will shift from easterly to northerly, especially in the upper-levels. This will begin to transport a significant amount of smoke from ongoing wildfires in southern Manitoba and central Saskatchewan into the Midwestern United States. There is still uncertainty into how much smoke will reach the surface, but impacts for northern Wisconsin will likely begin this evening. The best chance for near-surface impacts should occur on Friday morning.
