The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Air Quality Advisory for today, Monday, June 2nd, citing elevated levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). These pollutants are anticipated to reach the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category. This advisory applies to the following Michigan counties: Menominee, Keweenaw, Dickinson, Iron, Marquette, Baraga, Southern Schoolcraft, Northern Houghton, Delta, Ontonagon, Gogebic, Luce, Alger, Northern Schoolcraft, and Southern Houghton. Residents, especially those with heart conditions or respiratory ailments like asthma, are strongly advised to limit strenuous outdoor activities. Key symptoms to watch for include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or irritation in the nose, throat, and eyes. To help mitigate air pollution, individuals are encouraged to avoid outdoor burning and minimize the use of residential wood-burning devices. Additionally, keeping windows closed overnight can help prevent smoke from entering homes, and running central air conditioning equipped with filters rated MERV-13 or higher is recommended for better indoor air quality.
