A West Michigan legislator wants to expand the bottle deposit law. Democratic State Senator Sean McCann of Kalamazoo has attempted in the past to expand the law and says he would support getting the question in front of voters in 2026. The proposed expansion would include plastic water bottles and change the law so consumers could easily return bottles to any store. While Sen. McCann supports a potential external effort to gather signatures to place the question on the 2026 ballot, if enacted by a simple majority vote, this legislation would forego any need for the collection of signatures to put the question before voters next year.
