The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office Drug Drop Box is available for use every Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM to collect controlled substances. The sheriff’s office is only collecting medications that are available by prescription, specifically controlled substances. There are certain prescription medications and OTC medicines that can be disposed of at home. Some of these include prescription creams, vitamins, Tylenol, ibuprofen, NSAIDS, and albuterol sulfate. Unused Inhalers and auto-injector pens may be brought to the drop box. We do not accept syringes. Syringes and used auto-injector pens can be placed in an empty laundry detergent bottle and disposed of in the trash.
At-Home Disposal:
Mix with Undesirable Substance: Remove the medication from its original container and mix it with an unappealing substance like dirt, used coffee grounds, or kitty litter.
Contain the Mixture: Place the mixture in a sealed bag or container, such as a disposable
container with a lid.
Throw in the Trash: Dispose of the sealed container in your regular household trash.
Remove Personal Information: Before disposing of empty containers, remove or scratch out all personal information, including prescription numbers, from labels.
Important Considerations:
Do Not Flush: Avoid flushing medications down the toilet or pouring them down the sink, as
wastewater treatment plants may not be equipped to remove them, potentially contaminating
waterways.
Check for Specific Instructions: Always check the medication packaging or consult your
pharmacist or healthcare provider for any specific disposal instructions.
Keep out of Reach: Ensure that disposed medications, even if mixed with undesirable
substances, are placed in a sealed container and kept out of reach of children and pets.
By following these guidelines, you can safely dispose of prescription and OTC medications and help protect public health and the environment.
