The Peshtigo Common Council has voted 5 to 1 to allow backyard chickens within city limits, joining other Wisconsin cities like Green Bay and Milwaukee. Homeowners can keep up to four hens—no roosters allowed—with a permit that must be renewed annually.
Mayor Katie Berman says the move was pre-emptive, ahead of a possible state law that would legalize backyard chickens statewide. She adds that most residents who reached out are in favor. But not everyone agrees. Alderman Keith Klimek voted no, citing concerns about attracting rodents and potential health risks. The ordinance includes strict rules on coop construction, sanitation, and daily cleaning, and anyone found in violation can have their permit revoked.
Chickens must be kept in the backyard, at least 20 feet from homes, and can’t be used for selling eggs or chicks. Applications are available from the city clerk after registering with the state. Permits can be denied if problems arise. For more details, visit the city website.
