A Menominee County judge has ruled that the city’s of Menominee’s special election on marijuana retailer limits will go ahead as planned on Tuesday August 5th. At Friday’s hearing, Judge Mary Barglind considered arguments from both sides: Alderperson Bill Plemel who brought the lawsuit against the city and his attorney claimed the election was illegal due to a lack of candidates, pointing to Michigan law on “regular elections.” City attorney Michael Celello countered that the council had the authority to call the election and noted that nearly a thousand ballots had already been cast, showing strong community interest. Judge Barglind decided to let the election proceed, warning that stopping it now would have broad consequences and limit public participation. She called for another hearing in two weeks to review if further legal action is needed. For now, Menominee voters will have their say on August 5th.
