Menominee County Sheriff Darrin Kudwa reports that the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office Water Rescue Unit was involved in two emergency calls on Saturday resulting in the rescue of four stranded persons. At approximately 2:51pm on Saturday, responders were alerted to an overturned kayak about 4 miles offshore from the Menominee Lighthouse. Two persons, and adult without a life preserver and a juvenile wearing a life jacket were located in the water and the Water Rescue unit along with the Menominee Fire Department got the hypothermic subjects out of the water. They and their kayak were transported back to shore. The Subjects were evaluated by medical professionals.
Then law enforcement personnel learned a relative of one of the subjects had launched a jet ski in an attempt to locate the kayakers and was unaccounted for. Menominee County 911 was able to contact the operator of the jet ski who said he and a 7 year old passenger were near the shore of Green Island but were unable to return due to water conditions. A Sheriff deputy and Water Rescue members responded to Green Island and transfer the juvenile to Marine 1 and assisted the operator in getting the jet ski safely to shore. Everyone was safe on land by 5pm.
