Marinette Police are investigating a drowning incident that took place last Wednesday. At Approximately 1:33pm, police were dispatched along with EMS and Fire Rescue personnel to the area of the Government Pier where they were able to see the victim in the water. Personnel entered the water from both sides of the Menominee River. An officer assisted by Fire Personnel were able to get the victim onto a rescue boat and lifesaving efforts were immediately begun as the victim was transported to the Menekaunee Boat landing where EMS was staged. The victim was transported first to Aurora Medical Center Bay Area and later to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Green Bay. The 13 year old victim died as a result of the incident on Saturday. An autopsy is planned on Wednesday.
As a result of the investigation, a 16 year old and a 21 year old male were taken into custody and charges have been referred to the Marinette County District Attorney’s office for review.
The investigation is ongoing, therefore police are withholding the names.
The family has identified the victim as Jakob Bowerman.
A candlelight vigil for Jakob Bowerman is scheduled for Wednesday night at the Government Pier in Marinette at 8 p.m. A GoFundMe account was set up to help the family and has raised over $13,500.
