The Marinette Common Council spent much of Tuesday night talking about the future of the city hall elevator. The city’s building inspector confirmed that if the aging elevator isn’t replaced, it will have to be decommissioned at an estimated cost of about ten thousand dollars. Mayor Steve Genisot says he’s been in talks with a developer on possible options.
Legal counsel noted that if the elevator project is rebid, it must go through a formal bidding process. In the meantime, City Engineer Brian Miller outlined how staff would move items without elevator access. Smaller items could be carried down the stairwell, but larger ones would need to be hoisted through a second-floor window using a city lift.
After discussion, council members voted to decommission the elevator formally rather than repair it, citing its age and rising maintenance costs—comparing it to fixing up an old motorcycle that few mechanics want to touch.
