U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin says Wisconsin’s lakes and the communities that rely on them are getting stronger protections. The Senate has unanimously passed the bipartisan Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Amendments Act, co-sponsored by Baldwin and Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan. The measure reauthorizes and expands a 1998 law, improving monitoring, forecasting, and prevention of harmful algal blooms—sometimes called “toxic algae”—and hypoxia, or low oxygen levels in the water. Baldwin says, “lakes are central to Wisconsin’s way of life, supporting businesses, providing drinking water, and attracting visitors. But warming waters, heavy storms, and nutrient runoff are fueling dangerous algal growth, threatening recreation, local economies, and public health.” The bill requires better coordination between federal task force agencies, states, local governments, and tribal nations. Baldwin says the goal is to keep Wisconsin’s waters safe and clean for generations to come.
