Menominee Mayor Casey Hoffman is pushing for changes to the city’s marijuana ordinances. He says the amendments are designed to avoid lawsuits from cannabis companies that have already invested in Menominee, while also addressing concerns about the number of dispensaries allowed.
In August, voters weighed in on capping dispensaries at nine. Judge Mary B. Barglind later ruled that election invalid, but kept a freeze on new licenses until after the November 4th vote. Hoffman proposed an “attrition strategy”: current licenses would be honored, but the city wouldn’t issue a new license until the number dropped to nine after a dispensary closed.
Menominee expects the debate to continue through the fall as it weighs its future in the cannabis business. The Committee of the Whole will take place on October 13th, with the council meeting on the 20th.
