Wisconsin’s race for governor is taking shape. With Governor Tony Evers announcing he will not seek a third term, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has entered the race. During a campaign stop in Marinette on Thursday, Crowley told Bay Cities Radio he wants to be governor for all Wisconsinites—no matter their political stripes.
Crowley made history in 2020 as Milwaukee County’s first Black executive and was re-elected last year with 85 percent of the vote. He points to cutting county carbon emissions in half and delivering the largest property tax cut in county history as signs of his leadership. He says his experience building billion-dollar budgets gives him firsthand knowledge of the challenges local governments face, particularly with levy limits.
Crowley’s path to politics grew out of hardship. He spoke openly about his parents’ struggles with addiction, his family’s evictions, and how a youth program called Urban Underground helped him turn his life around. That led to work in nonprofits, state government, and eventually a successful run for the Assembly in 2016. Crowley says his lived experience makes him uniquely qualified to lead. David Crowley now joins the field of candidates vying to become Wisconsin’s next governor.
