The U.S. Department of Labor has announced more than $86 million in new grants to help states expand job training in critical industries. Fourteen states will share the funding through the Industry-Driven Skills Training Fund, aimed at boosting innovation, strengthening domestic production, and meeting workforce needs. More than $20 million is earmarked for shipbuilding, with training in welding, marine electrical work, and other skilled trades. Here in Wisconsin, the Department of Workforce Development will receive $7.3 million to support training in advanced manufacturing and generative AI. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer says the initiative follows President Trump’s executive orders on skilled trades and maritime strength, and will help prepare Americans for what she calls “mortgage-paying jobs of the future.” The grants will reimburse employers that provide training and retention in high-demand fields, with additional funding rounds possible later this year.
