The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says the number of children under age six tested for lead exposure has increased by 26 percent statewide — a jump that’s helping health officials catch more cases of lead poisoning early. This week, through the 25th, marks National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, and state leaders are urging parents to have children tested and to avoid common sources of lead, like old paint, dust, and plumbing. Governor Tony Evers says he approved an emergency rule earlier this year to lower Wisconsin’s lead poisoning threshold, making more children eligible for early intervention and support. Officials say parents can learn more about testing and prevention by visiting the Wisconsin DHS website or contacting their local health department.
