Governor Tony Evers has declared an energy emergency in Wisconsin as fuel distributors struggle to keep up with demand for home heating. The governor says a pipeline disruption in the Midwest, combined with high demand from severe winter weather, has created delays in getting heating oil and propane to residents across the state. Evers says the order is necessary to keep people safe: “The health, welfare, and safety of our neighbors depend on access to fuel for home heating… this emergency ensures folks have what they need to stay warm,” the governor says. The Wisconsin Public Service Commission’s Office of Energy Innovation reports long lines at terminals and drivers traveling longer distances to pick up fuel. The order, Executive Order 282, waives certain state and federal hours-of-service limits, allowing fuel transport drivers to work longer hours to meet demand. The emergency waiver remains in effect through January 2nd, or until the heating fuel shortage eases.
