The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving fake legal threats and gift card demands. Sheriff Randy Miller says scammers are calling people while posing as employees of the Sheriff’s Department. Victims report getting voicemails claiming they’re in legal trouble — often for supposedly missing jury duty — and are told to call another number immediately. Once they do, the caller demands payment using gift cards. Authorities stress this is not how law enforcement operates. The Sheriff’s Office will never ask for payment over the phone or request gift cards to resolve legal matters. If you ever question whether a call is legitimate, you’re encouraged to hang up and contact the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office directly at 715-732-7627 to speak with an officer.
