A jury trial is now set for a Pound woman accused of causing a deadly head-on crash last Thanksgiving. Sixty-seven-year-old Cheryl Mitchell appeared in Brown County Court this week through her attorney, where a judge scheduled her jury trial to begin April 29th. A final pre-trial hearing is planned for April 14th. Mitchell faces six felony charges connected to the crash, including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. According to the criminal complaint, deputies responded to Interstate 43 near the Highway 96 ramp around 5 p.m. on November 27th and found a minivan and an SUV with severe front-end damage. Investigators say Mitchell, who was driving the SUV, showed signs of intoxication, smelled strongly of alcohol, and admitted to drinking wine before getting behind the wheel. Witnesses told deputies the SUV had been traveling north in the southbound lanes when it struck the van head-on. One man in the van died two days later from his injuries. Two other people in the vehicle were seriously hurt. The man who died was the adult son of the other two passengers. Prosecutors say Mitchell refused voluntary testing, and a blood sample was later taken under a search warrant. Court records show she has a prior OWI conviction from 1989. Mitchell remains in the Brown County Jail on a 150-thousand-dollar cash bond.
