Discussion over the future of the Stephenson Library and potential reuse of the former UW-Green Bay Marinette campus took center stage during a recent Special Marinette City Council meeting. Marinette Mayor Steve Genisot opened the discussion by clarifying that recent conversations with county leadership were focused on collaboration and long-term use of public assets, including the university campus and library operations.
During citizen comments, architect and consultant Ben Joris urged council to prioritize preservation of the historic Stephenson Library, calling it a major community asset tied to the city’s identity.
Joris warned that any future changes should ensure the building does not become vacant or lose its prominence within the downtown core.
Council leadership also emphasized that the city has not advocated for relocating the Stevenson Library, despite ongoing county discussions about long-term campus and facility planning.
Officials say any future decisions involving the UW campus, theater, field house, or library would require further research, legal review, and potential agreements between the city and county. Council members stressed that no final decisions have been made, and discussions will continue as both municipalities evaluate costs, ownership, and long-term community impact.
