Discussion over the future direction of planning efforts in Marinette County is drawing criticism after a recent County Board move to revisit hiring a consultant. One local leader says the decision may be premature and risks derailing progress, especially without clear objectives and full coordination with the City of Marinette, Alderperson Rick Polzin.
The concern centers on whether the county has clearly defined goals before committing additional time and taxpayer resources. Officials have noted that any major redevelopment discussions — including those tied to the former UW-Green Bay Marinette campus — will require cooperation from the City of Marinette.
There are also concerns the recent meeting may have shifted away from problem-solving and toward political positioning, rather than focusing on long-term community planning.
In response, a proposal is now being put forward to bring both governments together in a public setting.
Supporters of the joint meeting say transparency and collaboration are critical, especially since the city’s approval would be required for key funding and planning decisions moving forward.
The proposed joint meeting could take place within the next 30 days if coordinated between county administration and the mayor’s office.
Officials say the goal would be to clarify objectives, outline responsibilities, and provide the public with a clearer path forward on future development discussions.
