A proposal to repurpose the historic Duer Gym building in Marinette is moving forward following discussion at the Marinette City Council meeting earlier this week. City leaders reviewed a letter of intent and potential development agreement for the property at 402 William Street, which would allow a local youth athletic training organization to redevelop the building.
Officials say the agreement would require specific timelines and investment benchmarks to ensure the project moves forward and the property does not remain vacant. The proposal would also include a buy-back provision allowing the city to reclaim the property if the development does not proceed as planned.
Council members noted the gym has been the subject of redevelopment discussions for years and said the current proposal could finally bring new activity to the site.
The developer, Riley Lacey, told council members the plan is to convert the space into a youth athletic training facility, focusing on skill development and sports performance programs.
Under the proposal, the developer says the building would largely remain intact, with interior changes designed to make the space more functional for training programs and youth athletics. City officials say additional steps would still be required before any redevelopment moves forward.
