The residents in Peshtigo have expressed their frustrations and shared their complaints to the Peshtigo School Board about the recent hike in their taxes. This comes after voters approved a nearly $40 million referendum in November. Voters in the district were told the tax rate would increase by 29 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value, or $29 per $100,000. Superintendent Patrick Rau says, “what we found out about the unexpected increase of the school property taxes was that the fair market value of people’s properties increased anywhere from zero percent upward to over 20 percent of their fair market value.”
Rau says, “we feel that a majority of the residents are still in favor of the referendum. We’ve already moved forward in December to begin borrowing the money. The first portion of the $40 million to borrow was $26 million. That’s been borrowed and also been sold in bonds.”
To compare the changes in your fair market value of your property, refer to past property tax bills. Previous property tax statements and fair market values can be found on the Marinette County website under the Treasurer’s Department.
