For over a decade, Dorothy Kowalski has served as President of the City Council, playing a pivotal role in championing transformative initiatives. Her tenure is marked by groundbreaking investments in affordable housing through the establishment of TID Districts. Additionally, she has driven improvements such as the introduction of garbage bins, extended dump hours, and essential road repairs. Under her leadership, the city has also seen the hiring of vital roles including a Marketing and Tourism Director, and enhancements in Human Resources and I.T. services. Furthermore, she has been instrumental in acquiring a new fire truck and rescue boat, reinforcing the city’s emergency response capabilities. Kowalski emphasizes, “housing, activities, and schools. Those are the three things that I think people look at.”
Having moved to Marinette in 1983, Kowalski has been a dedicated resident for 42 years. She cherishes her role as a mother to Megan and Matthew, and as a grandmother to Brenna, Madeline, and Jackson, all of whom reside nearby, allowing her to spend ample time with them. Professionally, she dedicated 36 years to teaching health and exercise science at UW-Marinette. She continues to impart her knowledge through online courses at UW-Milwaukee.
Recreation has been a cornerstone of Kowalski’s leadership. She has been a staunch advocate for enhancing recreational facilities, successfully securing funds for a new splash pad at the Civic Center. Infrastructure improvements have also been a significant focus, with her efforts leading to secured funding for road repairs and various city projects. Kowalski asserts, “we’re making real progress, but there’s still work to be done.” Her commitment to fiscal responsibility is evident in her initiatives to optimize budget efficiency while preventing tax increases. If re-elected, Kowalski is determined to continue prioritizing housing, recreation, and community development.
