The Michigan Senate has approved legislation that will give survivors of sex abuse a longer period of time to report the crime and get their day in court. Supporters say the bills will eliminate the statute of limitations for civil cases and allow a survivor to recover damages if there is a criminal case that ends with a conviction. In addition, the legislation would allow survivors to file documents ten years after the claim accrues, seven years after someone realizes they were a victim of a crime or by their 42nd birthday. The bills now head to the state House.
