Former Menominee Mayor Jean Stegeman, who warned of what a proliferation of dispensaries could mean for the city at the time the city council voted to uncap the number of licenses, supports the referendum.
Stegeman says the proposed $60 million development could have meant $2 million a year to the city in property taxes.
The referendum is scheduled to be on Tuesday’s ballot. A hearing will be held this morning in Menominee Circuit Court on a lawsuit filed by alderman Bill Plemel that asks for the city to be barred from holding the August election since he believes the election cannot count as a regular election for referendum since there are no other races on what normally would be a primary election.
