With 25 lives lost in ATV and UTV crashes so far this year, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is warning riders about the common – and preventable – causes behind these tragedies. More than half of this year’s crashes have involved rollovers, and in nearly every case, victims were not wearing a helmet or seatbelt.
“UTVs and ATVs are not designed like cars,” said Lt. Jake Holsclaw, the DNR’s off-highway vehicle administrator. “When people treat them like they are – speeding on pavement or taking sharp turns – they roll over. And if you’re not buckled in or wearing a helmet, the consequences can be deadly.”
The DNR reminds riders to follow these safety practices:
- Always wear a helmet and seatbelt.
- Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Avoid unfamiliar terrain and follow posted speed limits.
- Share your riding plans with someone not on the trip.
Perhaps most concerning, officials say, is that many operators involved in fatal crashes had not completed a DNR-approved safety course. Training is required for anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, and courses are available for riders of all ages on the DNR website.
