An Oconto County bear hunting guide has been banned from hunting for a year and ordered to pay three-thousand dollars after being convicted of illegal bear baiting. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 64-year-old Timothy Collar pleaded guilty last month in federal court in Green Bay. Prosecutors say in preparation for the 2023 bear hunting season, Collar placed multiple oversized plastic bait barrels in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in northern Oconto County. The barrels were left uncapped, placed near public roads, and were much larger than the law allows. Wisconsin law prohibits hunting over bait contained in plastic, metal, glass, wood, or paper, and Collar’s actions violated both state and federal regulations. As part of his sentence, Collar was fined three-thousand dollars and is barred from hunting for one year.
