The Wisconsin DNR is inviting experienced hunters to pass on the tradition of deer hunting during this year’s Youth Deer Hunt, coming up Saturday, October 11th and Sunday, October 12th. The special hunt is open to Wisconsin residents and nonresidents 15 years old and younger, giving them a chance to learn hunting skills at a time when deer face less pressure than during the regular nine-day season. Youth may hunt with or without hunter education certification, but a mentor must be present at all times. Rules differ based on age and training: younger hunters and those without certification need a licensed, hunter-education graduate within arm’s reach, while those 12 to 15 who have completed hunter safety may hunt with an adult in visual and voice contact. Safety is key. Hunters are reminded of the firearm rules of TAB-K: treat every firearm as if it’s loaded, always point the muzzle in a safe direction, be sure of your target and what’s beyond, and keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. During the youth hunt, at least half of all hunters’ clothing above the waist must be blaze orange or pink. And new hunters can mark the moment by applying for a First Harvest Certificate through the DNR.
