The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating a deadly crash that followed a police pursuit in Niagara on Wednesday afternoon. According to the Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation, around 1:11 p.m., a Niagara police officer attempted to stop a vehicle in the city. The driver took off at a high rate of speed, crossed into oncoming traffic on Main Street, and collided with a commercial vehicle. First responders tried to save the driver, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured in the crash. The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave, following department policy. The state’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the case, with help from Wisconsin, State Patrol, the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Rescue, and the Niagara Fire Department. The findings will be turned over to the Marinette County District Attorney once the investigation is complete.
