Wisconsin saw a rise in new unemployment filings last week. The U.S. Department of Labor says 5,468 people filed initial jobless claims, up from 4,322 the week before. Initial claims are often viewed as a snapshot of layoffs across the state. Nationally, filings moved in the opposite direction. U.S. unemployment claims dropped to 191,000, a decrease of 27,000 from the prior week on a seasonally adjusted basis. Nebraska recorded the largest percentage jump in weekly claims, nearly doubling at 98 percent, while the Virgin Islands saw the biggest decline, falling more than 58 percent.
