On December 5th, the Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a stolen vehicle. The complainant told deputies a man, later identified as James Nys of Wausaukee, had taken a 1995 Dodge pickup for a test drive and never returned. Investigators later learned Nys allegedly used the same method to steal another vehicle in Delta County. The Marinette Police Department was notified, and officers learned Nys was scheduled to report to a probation meeting at the Marinette County Probation Office. Just after 10 a.m., Nys arrived at the probation office driving a newer gray Ford F-150. He was taken into custody inside the building by Marinette police officers, with assistance from the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office. While being arrested, authorities say Nys made statements indicating he may be involved in a larger vehicle theft operation connected to Chicago. Nys was arrested on a probation warrant related to the vehicle thefts. Authorities note he has prior convictions for vehicle theft and had recently been released from prison. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether additional thefts occurred in other jurisdictions. Nys is scheduled to return to court on January 5th at 1 p.m. at the Marinette County Courthouse.
