Joseph Dulak has come up short. The recall centers on allegations that Dulak failed to properly recuse himself from City Council discussions and votes involving marijuana-related zoning and ordinance issues. Petitioners claim Dulak had a potential conflict of interest tied to property ownership and development connected to proposed cannabis businesses.
A recall petition was filed earlier this year and reviewed by the Menominee County Clerk. After an initial challenge, a judge ruled the petition language was factual and legally sufficient, allowing recall supporters to begin collecting signatures. To trigger a recall election, petitioners were required to submit a minimum number of valid signatures from registered voters within Dulak’s ward.
Now, here’s the latest development…
Menominee County Clerk Marc Kleiman says recall petitions with signatures were submitted on December 15th. After further review, Kleiman says the petitions did not contain enough valid signatures to move forward. According to the Clerk’s Office, petitioners submitted 230 signatures. However, a large number of those signatures were ruled invalid because the individuals were either not registered to vote or were registered outside the required precinct or ward.
Kleiman says the Board of Electors has determined petitioners may still collect an entirely new set of signatures and resubmit them. The deadline to do so is January 30th.Dulak has previously disputed the allegations, maintaining he followed proper procedures and that the recall effort is politically motivated.
