A Menominee County man has been sentenced to prison in connection to a home invasion targeting an elderly veteran and a separate methamphetamine possession charge.
Forty-year-old Jeffrey Donner was sentenced Monday in Menominee County Circuit Court. Prosecutors argued Donner exploited a vulnerable victim after learning the homeowner, a 70-year-old man, was staying in a nursing home.
Court records show items stolen included rare coins, cash saved for funeral expenses, weapons, a Purple Heart medal, and a World War Two military uniform. The victim told the court he felt angry, helpless, and frustrated following the break-in.
During sentencing, Donner admitted wrongdoing and apologized to the victims and his family.
Defense attorneys argued Donner struggles with long-term addiction and needed treatment instead of prison. But prosecutors pushed for a lengthy sentence, pointing to what they called a nearly 30-year criminal history and repeated failures while on supervision.
Judge Christopher Ninomiya ultimately sentenced Donner to 29 to 60 months in prison on the home invasion conviction, along with a concurrent sentence of 23 to 120 months on the methamphetamine charge.
Before sentencing, the judge acknowledged Donner’s remorse but said the court also had to protect the community.
Donner received credit for 132 days already served and was remanded to the Michigan Department of Corrections following sentencing.
