The Menominee City Council is expected to make a decision tonight on whether to move forward with the controversial Flock Safety camera system.
The automated license plate reader technology is designed to help law enforcement identify stolen vehicles, locate missing persons, and assist in criminal investigations by capturing images of license plates entering and leaving the city.
Supporters say the system has already proven useful in neighboring communities, including Marinette, where police say the cameras have helped generate investigative leads.
But critics continue raising concerns over privacy, government surveillance, and how long vehicle data would be stored or shared.
The proposed system would not record video or track people in real time, according to city officials. Instead, it captures still images of license plates, vehicle descriptions, and distinguishing features.
During previous meetings, some residents voiced concerns about cybersecurity risks and potential misuse of the technology, while others argued the cameras could become an important public safety tool.
Tonight’s vote follows weeks of debate and public discussion inside the community.
The Menominee City Council meeting begins tonight at 6pm at Menominee City Hall.
