Menominee Area Public Schools officials are investigating after fentanyl was discovered inside Menominee Elementary School Monday morning.
Superintendent Drew Buyarski says the substance was found in an upstairs hallway. The area was immediately secured, and school officials took steps to protect students and staff.
At this time, officials have not determined where the fentanyl came from or how it entered the building.
Buyarski says the district notified families to provide accurate information and prevent rumors from spreading.
In a follow-up message, Buyarski urged parents to speak with their children about the dangers of unknown substances and the importance of reporting anything suspicious.
He also encouraged families to contact a trusted school staff member if their child has information about how the substance may have entered the school.
As a precaution, the district is increasing security throughout its buildings, and staff members have been instructed to remain on heightened alert.
Buyarski reassured families that students are safe and encouraged parents to send their children to school as scheduled today.
The investigation into the origin of the substance remains ongoing.
