The City of Marinette is now indirectly involved in a lawsuit over possible PFAS contamination linked to dredging work done more than a decade ago at the Menekaunee Harbor. City of Marinette Mayor Steve Genisot says the project was completed under state and federal guidance, long before PFAS contamination was widely known.
Ten local families have filed suit against three of the city’s contractors, claiming contaminated materials from that dredging operation may have contributed to PFAS pollution in the Town of Peshtigo. Genisot says the city itself hasn’t been sued but is being pulled into the case through cross-suits between the contractors.
The city maintains it followed all environmental and safety requirements in place at the time
Genisot says the case could eventually be folded into a broader federal PFAS lawsuit, which would extend the process and increase legal costs.
