A former caretaker is headed to trial, accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars in jewelry from a 91-year-old Oconto Falls woman with cognitive impairment. Fifty-four-year-old Svitlana Yelenchuk is charged with felony theft of movable property valued between ten- and one-hundred-thousand dollars. The charge carries an enhanced penalty because the alleged victim is elderly. A judge ordered Yelenchuk to stand trial following a preliminary hearing Friday. Her arraignment is set for February 17th. According to the criminal complaint, family members noticed several valuable items missing from the woman’s home, including a Rolex watch, diamond earrings, and a gold diamond bracelet. Investigators say the Rolex and ten other items were later pawned in Green Bay for nearly nineteen-thousand dollars, with the pawn shop identifying Yelenchuk as the seller. Yelenchuk told police the woman had given her the jewelry. However, the victim’s daughter told investigators the family never gave permission for any items to be taken. Authorities allege Yelenchuk knew about the woman’s cognitive decline and took advantage of her condition to sell high-value items for cash. If convicted, Yelenchuk faces significant prison time.
