A Town of Peshtigo resident is without a home after an early-morning fire that investigators say started outside the house. The Town of Peshtigo Fire Department was called just after 2:10 a.m. Thursday to a fully involved structure fire in the N2000 block of Shore Drive. When crews arrived, flames were spreading along the exterior, up the roof eaves, and into the second story. Firefighters confirmed the homeowner and two dogs made it out safely. Crews knocked down heavy fire in the stairway and second floor, then spent several more hours searching for and extinguishing hot spots. Investigators say the fire began outside where hay had been piled up and used with an electric blanket in an attempt to thaw frozen water pipes. The burning hay ignited the home’s siding and spread through the walls. Damage was mostly contained to the second story and attic, but water and smoke damage throughout the first floor left the home uninhabitable. Fire crews cleared the scene around 5:50 a.m. No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is assisting the homeowner.
