The proposed Downtown Development Authority Tax Increment Financing plan returned to the Menominee City Council after revisions aimed at addressing concerns raised by council members and residents from the previous special council meeting.
The TIF proposal would allow future increases in property tax revenue generated within the downtown district to be reinvested into redevelopment projects and infrastructure improvements in the area.
DDA Members argued the plan could provide long-term funding for downtown improvements and economic development projects without raising current tax rates.
Among the changes discussed were shortening the life of the district from 30 years to a compromise of 25 years, requiring regular reviews of the program, and ensuring any future borrowing would require approval from the city council.
After a lengthy discussion the Menominee City Council voted a unanimous yes, in favor of a Downtown TIF District.
