Menominee city leaders say several long-awaited park improvements are moving forward, with more possibly on the way.

Ward Two Council Member Donna Marineau says while much of the public conversation has focused on the city’s challenges, there’s also a positive story to tell.

One of the most visible examples is along Harbor Drive, where improvements include a new walking and biking path, landscaping and areas for future benches and picnic tables.

Marineau says the project has taken years to develop, but the result is something the community can now enjoy.

And Harbor Drive isn’t the end of the work.

The city is researching new playground equipment for the First Street area near the library, while a grant application remains pending for improvements at Henes Park.

Marineau says the city also has a backup plan for Henes Park if that grant doesn’t come through.

Another idea moving forward would transform Dubey Park into a multi-purpose space, including a dog park while possibly retaining space for children and winter ice skating.

Marineau says the funding being discussed comes from money designated specifically for city parks.

Marineau says residents may need some patience — projects like Harbor Drive can take years of planning before the work becomes visible.

But she says the goal now is simple: keep moving Menominee forward — one park and one project at a time.
