A Lake Township woman will spend at least two decades in prison for sexually abusing her 12-year-old daughter.

Raquel Irving was sentenced to 20 to 60 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections under a plea agreement reached in the case.

Prosecutors told the court the abuse occurred over several months and involved Irving and her boyfriend. They said the child was groomed with alcohol, marijuana and pornography before being sexually assaulted.

The prosecutor said Irving betrayed the person she was supposed to protect.

The judge called it one of the worst cases the court had ever witnessed and said the sentencing guidelines were “pathetically inadequate.”

Irving apologized in court and said she had failed as a mother. The judge said two decisions weighed in her favor: agreeing to testify against her co-defendant and terminating her parental rights.

The judge then imposed the agreed-upon prison term.

Irving must also register under Michigan’s Sex Offenders Registration Act and undergo lifetime electronic monitoring.

She received credit for 219 days already served.
