The City of Marinette is ending its contract for Flock license-plate reader cameras, while council members are also asking for more information before committing to a long-term agreement involving the Stephenson Public Library.

The Common Council voted to cancel the Flock camera contract following concerns raised about privacy, data use, and public trust.

Council members emphasized the decision was not a criticism of Marinette police officers, who they said followed department policies when using the system.

One council member Liz Mikutowski said canceling the contract should be followed by broader protections governing any similar technology the city may consider in the future.

The council then turned its attention to a proposed lease between the city and Marinette County for the Stephenson Public Library.

County Administrator Kevin Solway said neither the city nor county has been able to locate an existing lease for the building. He said a new agreement would clearly establish which government is responsible for maintenance and other expenses.

The county’s proposal includes a 25-year lease and calls for the city and county to split mutually approved major building expenses.

Council members raised questions about the building’s exterior, parking-lot responsibilities and potential future repair costs.

The council stopped short of approving the proposed lease and agreed to bring the issue back after gathering additional information.
